Common Signs Your Electrical System Needs Professional Repair
It's crucial to pay attention to any unusual electrical behavior in your home or business. Addressing these signs promptly can prevent minor issues from escalating into major hazards or costly damage. Here are key indicators that it's time to call Patriot Electric Heating and Cooling for electrical repair:
- Flickering or Dimming Lights: If your lights frequently flicker, dim, or brighten unexpectedly, especially when an appliance turns on, it suggests an inconsistent power supply. This could be due to loose wiring, an overloaded circuit, or an issue with your electrical panel.
- Frequently Tripping Circuit Breakers: Circuit breakers are designed to trip when a circuit is overloaded to prevent overheating and fire. If a specific breaker (or multiple breakers) trips regularly, it's a clear sign of an overloaded circuit, a short circuit, or a ground fault somewhere in your wiring. Do not simply reset without investigation; continuous tripping indicates a persistent problem.
- Outlets or Switches That Don't Work: An outlet or switch that suddenly stops working could indicate a loose connection, damaged wiring, or a tripped GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) breaker. While sometimes a simple fix, it often requires professional diagnosis.
- Buzzing or Sizzling Sounds: Any buzzing, sizzling, or crackling noises coming from outlets, switches, or your electrical panel are serious warning signs. These sounds often indicate loose connections, arcing, or other dangerous electrical faults that could lead to a fire.
- Burning Smell: A burning odor emanating from an outlet, switch, appliance, or your electrical panel is an immediate emergency. This smell typically signifies overheating wires or components, which could quickly escalate into an electrical fire. If you detect a burning smell, immediately shut off power to the affected area if safe to do so, and call for emergency electrical service.
- Warm or Hot Outlets/Switch Plates: Electrical outlets or light switch plates that feel warm or hot to the touch indicate excessive heat being generated, likely from loose connections, overloaded circuits, or faulty wiring. This is a significant fire risk and requires immediate attention.
- Sparks or Scorching: Any visible sparks when plugging in an appliance, or scorch marks/discoloration around outlets, switches, or the electrical panel, are critical signs of a serious electrical problem that could lead to a fire.
- Loose Outlets or Switches: Outlets or switches that feel loose in the wall, or where plugs easily fall out, can indicate damaged wiring or improper installation, creating a shock or fire hazard.
- Shock or Tingle When Touching Appliances: Receiving a mild shock or tingle when touching an appliance or switch can indicate faulty wiring, improper grounding, or a problem with the appliance itself. Do not ignore this; it's a sign of electrical leakage.
- Outdated Wiring (e.g., Knob-and-Tube, Aluminum): If your home has very old wiring, it may not be able to safely handle modern electrical demands. While not an immediate emergency, these systems are inherently less safe and more prone to issues, often requiring comprehensive repairs or replacement.

Primary reason for service was my attic fans were not working. Colton diagnosed the problem. Also, I needed a generator transfer switch installed on the electric panel, plus a bathroom plug installed and a faulty GFI replaced and a faulty breaker replaced on panel. One attic fan needed replacement. After all repairs and installs were completed Colton patiently explained how to safely use the transfer switch and label the panel for easy use. His assistant, Jaxon, was excellent. Both were professional and very easy to work with and pleasant. This is a rather lengthy review but I can't say enough about how great these guys were. I will definitely use Patriot for any future projects!

FAQ
What are the warning signs that my home needs urgent electrical repair?
Your electrical system often gives physical warning signs before a complete failure occurs. If you notice a burning plastic smell, buzzing sounds, or discolored outlets, you need to call Patriot Electric Heating and Cooling immediately, as these are indicators of active arcing or overheating components.
We recommend performing a "Sensory Check" of your home. If you experience any of the following, do not ignore it:
- The "Fishy" Smell: A distinct smell of fish or urine near an outlet is actually the scent of overheating plastic and wire insulation. This is a critical fire hazard.
- Warm Switches: Dimmer switches can get slightly warm, but a standard toggle switch or outlet plate should never feel hot to the touch. This indicates a loose connection or overload.
- Buzzing or Sizzling: Electricity should be silent. If you hear a crackling sound from a switch or behind a wall, you likely have a loose wire that is arcing (jumping gaps).
- Whole-House Flickering: If lights flicker in multiple rooms when your AC or refrigerator kicks on, it often points to a serious issue with your main neutral wire or service entrance.
Is it dangerous to ignore minor electrical problems?
Yes. Unlike a leaky faucet that just wastes water, electrical problems never fix themselves—they only get worse. At Patriot Electric Heating and Cooling, we consider even small issues like a flickering light or a loose outlet to be potential fire hazards because they indicate resistance, which generates heat inside your walls.
Ignoring these signs is dangerous for three critical reasons:
- The "Arcing" Risk (Fire): A loose wire doesn't just sit there; it sparks (arcs) across the gap. Over time, this intense heat melts insulation and ignites the wooden studs inside your walls.
- Electronics Damage: Issues like "dropped neutral" connections can send irregular voltage spikes through your home, instantly frying expensive appliances like refrigerators, TVs, and computers.
- Insurance Liability: This is the risk most homeowners miss. If an electrical fire occurs and the insurance investigator finds evidence of long-term negligence (like unaddressed DIY wiring or known code violations), your claim could be denied.
Why do my electrical outlets or light switches feel warm to the touch?
The answer depends entirely on the type of switch. If it is a Dimmer Switch, slight warmth is normal—it uses metal fins to dissipate excess energy as heat. However, if a Standard Toggle Switch or an Electrical Outlet feels warm, you have a serious problem.
At Patriot Electric Heating and Cooling, we treat warm standard devices as an emergency. Heat is a byproduct of resistance, meaning electricity is struggling to flow through a connection.
This is usually caused by:
- Loose Connections: Over time, the screws holding your wires can loosen. As the gap widens, electricity "arcs" (jumps) across it, creating intense heat that melts the plastic faceplate.
- "Backstabbed" Wiring: In many builder-grade homes in East Texas, wires are often pushed into the back of the outlet (held by a spring) rather than wrapped around a screw. These springs fail over time, leading to loose connections and heat buildup.
- Circuit Overload: If you are running high-draw appliances like space heaters or hair dryers, the outlet may not be rated to handle that much current for that long, causing the internal contacts to heat up.
- Safety Warning: If a standard switch or outlet feels hot, smells like fish, or shows discoloration, stop using it immediately and flip the breaker off. Do not turn it back on until a professional has inspected the wiring.
